The architecture students at Hochschule Düsseldorf actively use wood as a building material and learn about the versatile design possibilities of this sustainable resource in the course of a wood construction project.
Hochschule Düsseldorf was founded in 1971 after the merger of several renowned predecessor institutions, including the State School of Engineering, the Peter Behrens School of Arts. Today, Hochschule Düsseldorf is one of the largest colleges of applied sciences in North Rhine-Westphalia, offering an extensive and interdisciplinary range of courses. Among other things, the Department of Architecture is very popular. First-year students from this department were commissioned to come up with model designs and then build them. The 4 x 4 metre objects were placed in front of the campus building. The space models serve as recreational areas for breaks and create seating areas. Through the practical implementation, the architecture students perceived a wide variety of design possibilities. This was made clear above all by the mix of private and public space. 12,000 linear metres of EGGER timber were used to make the space models. This was sponsored together with DEG Dach-Fassade-Holz eG. The space models made of rod elements can be dismantled and are recycled after dismantling. By using a renewable resource, the students learn about sustainability. With such projects, the university not only promotes the trainees, but also wood construction.
