Worktops

Whether you're installing new countertops or making adjustments to existing ones, knowing how to join laminate worktops properly is a must if you want a seamless and professional finish. Why proper joining and sealing matters

Joining and sealing decorative laminate worktops correctly will ensure a smooth, even surface that enhances the appearance of your kitchen counters — but it has benefits for the longevity of your installation, too. Proper sealing prevents moisture from seeping into the joins, which can cause swelling or damage over time. Whether you’re working with a 25mm laminate worktop or a thicker 38mm variation, following the right process is key to a professional finish that lasts. How to join laminate worktops together

Begin by following our worktop installation guide for best results. To join two laminate worktops together, follow these steps:

1. Measure and cut accurately

Begin by measuring the sections you need to join. Use a straight edge and a circular saw or a router to make precise cuts. If you are joining a corner section, you will need a worktop jig to cut a masons' mitre joint (also known as a butt and scribe joint) for a seamless connection.

2. Apply a worktop jointing compound

Once the edges are cut, apply a worktop jointing compound along the cut edges. This helps create a watertight seal and prevents moisture from seeping in. Use a flexible and waterproof adhesive that is designed specifically for laminate worktops. We always recommend using EGGERSeal when installing EGGER worktops to avoid invalidating our generous 10-year guarantee.

3. Use worktop bolts

Worktop bolts are essential for securing the join. Position them in the pre-cut bolt slots on the underside of the worktop. Tighten the bolts evenly to pull the two sections together.

4. Use a biscuited joint for extra strength (optional)

A biscuited joint can provide additional reinforcement if you need it. This involves cutting small slots into both worktops and inserting a wooden ‘biscuit’ with adhesive to strengthen the join.

5. Remove excess adhesive and seal the join

Wipe away any excess jointing compound before it dries. Once the worktops are securely in place, apply a colour-matched sealant along the joint to create a smooth and waterproof finish.

How to join squared edge laminate worktops

Squared edge worktops are a very popular choice for a modern and minimalist look. However, due to their clean and angular appearance, they require extra precision when joining.

1. Align the edges correctly

When joining squared edge laminate worktops, ensure the edges are perfectly aligned to avoid visible gaps. You can do this by dry fitting the worktops before applying any adhesive to check for a flush connection.

2. Seal the edges properly

Once joined, apply a waterproof sealant along the seam to prevent moisture ingress which can cause your square edges to be misaligned or “wobbly”. This is particularly important for kitchens where worktops are exposed to frequent spills and humidity.

How to seal worktop edges

Sealing the edges of a laminate worktop is crucial to protect it from water damage and ensure a neat finish. Here’s how to do it properly:

1. Clean and dry

Before applying any sealant, thoroughly clean the worktop edges and ensure they are completely dry.

2. Apply contact adhesive

For worktop edges, consider using a waterproof adhesive like EGGERSeal. Apply the adhesive liberally to the bare edge, ensuring it soaks into the material. Apply multiple coats for a truly waterproof surface.

3. Apply sealant

Apply a waterproof sealant along the edges, especially around sinks and high-moisture areas. Use a high-quality, mould-resistant silicone sealant specifically designed for kitchens. Apply a bead of sealant along the edges where the worktop meets the wall, sink cutout, or other surfaces, and use a sealant tool to smooth the bead for a professional finish.

How to attach worktop edging

Worktop edging, usually in the form of a strip or trim, helps protect the exposed edges of your worktop from damage and moisture while enhancing the overall appearance of your installation. Worktop edging can either blend into your worktops for a seamless finish or contrast with them for a bold effect.

1. Choose the right edge trim

Depending on the style of your worktop, you can use either laminate edging strips that match the worktop surface and provide a uniform look, or metal or PVC edge trims for a contrasting finish. Metal and PVC edge trims might also provide additional protection against impact damage.

2. Cut the edging strip to size

Measure and cut the edging strip slightly longer than the worktop edge to allow for precise trimming.

3. Apply the strip

If using laminate edging strips, apply a contact adhesive along the exposed worktop edge. Press the edging strip firmly into place and allow it to bond. For pre-glued laminate edging, use a household iron on a low setting to heat and activate the adhesive. Press the edging strip firmly onto the worktop edge.

4. Secure and trim

Once attached, allow the edging to cool before trimming any excess. Use a laminate trimmer or a sharp utility knife to cut away any excess edging. Lightly sand the edges with fine-grit sandpaper or use a router or fine file to smooth out the edges.

Finally, apply a thin layer of sealant along the edge to ensure longevity and durability.

Tips for a professional finish

  • Always measure at least twice before cutting to avoid errors.
  • Use clamps when joining worktops to maintain perfect alignment.
  • Choose a colourless sealant or one that matches the worktop colour for a seamless look.
  • If you’re unsure about cutting or joining, consider hiring a professional to ensure a flawless result.

By following these steps, you can achieve a professional-looking installation that is both durable and visually appealing. Whether you’re working with a squared edge laminate worktop or a postformed design , proper joining and sealing techniques will ensure your kitchen worktops remain in excellent condition for years to come.
