A person is using a tablet to find out about the product's environmental performance.

To present product information with environmental relevance transparently, we offer our EcoFacts. They show selected environmental key figures for our products at a glance.

We provide you with reliable data and are happy to advise you. Key information on the environmental and health aspects of our products is available and collated in one place. EGGER offers two formats for this: EPDs (Environmental Product Declarations) and EHDs (Environmental and Health Data Sheets).

Our EcoFacts: Product sustainability at a glance

Wood is our most valuable resource. We manufacture a wide product range for furniture and interior design, flooring and wood construction from this renewable raw material. In doing so, we pursue a fact-based approach to transparency: our EcoFacts show selected environmental key figures for our products at a glance.

EcoFact carbon footprint

Wood-based materials store carbon throughout their period of use.

Every product leaves its mark on the climate. The CO2 footprint can be used to quantify how large these traces are. The carbon footprint is calculated from three components of the Global Warming Potentials (GWP):

  • GWP-biogenic: As it grows, wood absorbs CO2 from the atmosphere. The carbon remains stored in the wood throughout its service life. The GWP-biogenic value quantifies this storage effect.

  • GWP-fossil: CO2 is emitted during the manufacture of a product and in its upstream value chain. GWP-fossil shows these emissions. As part of our climate strategy towards Net Zero by 2050, we aim to reduce this very figure to zero.

  • GWP-luluc: GWP-luluc measures how land use and changes in land use affect the amount of CO2 released or absorbed. For example, activities such as forest management or conversion to agricultural land cause emissions in this category.

  • GWP-total: Adding all three values together results in GWP-total, the so-called carbon footprint. For our wood-based products, this value is very low. If the wood in our product has absorbed more CO2 than is emitted during manufacturing, the upstream value chain and land use, the carbon footprint is even negative.

The EcoFact is measured in kg CO2e/m² or kg CO2e/m³. It indicates the calculated climate impact of the product within the assessment boundaries applied. The calculation has been externally verified. It corresponds to the cradle-to-gate GWP indicators based on our EPDs (A1-A3 in accordance with EN 15804+A2).

EcoFact Share of renewable resources

Wood grows back.

Wood grows back in just a few decades. Fossil and mineral raw materials, on the other hand, take millions of years to form. It is therefore important to continuously increase the share of renewable resources.

This EcoFact shows how much of the material used to manufacture the product comes from renewable resources such as wood or paper. We also transparently disclose how much material comes from fossil resources (such as conventional glue, wax and resin) and mineral resources (such as stone and minerals).

This makes it clear which raw materials a product contains and what proportion of them consists of renewable resources. At the same time, we are exploring alternative glue systems in order to reduce the use of fossil raw materials in the long term.

The EcoFact relates to all materials used in the product. The calculation is based on documented production and raw material data for the respective financial year.

EcoFact Share of material from the circular economy

We use natural resources responsibly.

It makes sense to reuse and recycle existing products as effectively as possible. This EcoFact shows how well this works for us in practice. It categorises the material used in the product:

Raw materials recovered from residual materials or recycling are also referred to as secondary raw materials. They contribute to the circular economy . We report material from the circular economy in two categories:

  • by-products from the sawmill industry: by-products from industrial wood-processing stages, such as hackchips or sawdust

  • recycled material: residual materials from the furniture industry, such as customers' production offcuts or third-grade wood-based materials (pre-consumer recycled material), as well as recycled materials that have already been with end customers, such as old furniture, palettes, recycled plastics or waste paper (post-consumer recycled material)

In addition, primary raw materials are used, i.e. raw materials that are not by-products and have not been recycled. In our products, this is primarily wood from sustainable forest management, such as thinning wood or roundwood unsuitable for sawing.

The EcoFact relates to all materials used in the product. The calculation is based on documented production and raw material data for the respective financial year.

EcoFact Recyclability

Wood-based materials have many lives.

Wood-based materials are designed for long-term use and can withstand everyday use for many years. Even at the end of their useful life, they remain a valuable resource: many products can be materially recycled and used for the manufacture of new board materials .

This EcoFact specifies whether a product can be used for the production of new wood-based materials at the end of its product life.

Environmental and health data at a glance: our EPDs and EHDs

The situation: What is the difference between QNG, LEED, BREEAM and DGNB? Building certification is a complex subject, as is the associated market for
products and services. Different standards and regulations apply depending on the country and region under which a building can receive a recognised certificate for quality criteria such as sustainability, health and energy efficiency.

We therefore compile key environmentally relevant data on our materials in our EPDs and EHDs and make it publicly available. In doing so, we help architects and fabricators select the materials they need so they can obtain building certification. Information on the life cycle of our products can be found in the Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and Environmental and Health Data Sheets (EHDs).

What are EPDs?

EPD stands for “Environmental Product Declaration“. Environmental Product Declarations provide key environmentally relevant information on a material and offer a reliable data basis:

  • Product descriptions
  • Description of the manufacturing process
  • Certificates & test reports of product characteristics
  • Components
  • Manufacturing Processes
  • Environmental Life Cycle Assessment
  • Resource management
  • Waste

What is the purpose of an EPD?

Environmental product declarations enable builders, architects and fabricators to assess the environmental impact of materials. They obtain more clarity and control when comparing different products and building methods.

This is because emissions are released and the environment is polluted not only during the utilisation phase, but also during the production and recycling of building materials.

Our EPDs contribute to the assessment of sustainable construction and living over the entire life cycle of a building.

What key figures are included in an EPD?

International standards and product category rules (PCR) define the framework conditions for EPDs. The environmental impact of the product is assessed in various modules, such as raw material extraction, production and disposal. The core of every EPD is the LCA. It shows how a product affects the climate, soil and water.

The programme sponsor for our EPDs is the renowned German Institut für Bauen und Umwelt (Institute for Construction and the Environment) (IBU). Our EPDs are based on our own calculation principles, thereby making our efforts to reduce the environmental impact of our products transparent.

What are EHDs?

The EHDs (Environmental and Health datasheets) summarise how our products meet the requirements of country-specific building certifications. The evidence to be provided for this is directly linked in the EHDs. You will also find information that is required in applying for Type II environmental declarations.
