EGGER Forest Management expertise has helped the client achieve their diverse objectives on a 2,300 hectare mixed estate with 535 hectares of native broadleaf, mixed policy and commercial conifer woodlands.
Issues:
- Mature conifer stands require felling and restocking
- Large areas of birch and oak woods degraded by herbivore browsing, lack structure and composition
- Estate brand vital to uphold
- Limited productivity from existing commercial conifers
- Multiple-objectives across a range of interests including sporting, holiday lets and forestry.
Solutions:
- Long-term forest plan approved in 2018. Phased restructuring in progress
- Development and delivery of a deer management plan and use of targeted methods to encourage natural regeneration of native tree species
- Forest certification to the UK Woodlands Assurance Standard
- Planting of new 144 ha conifer woodland completed in early-2019. Further woodland creation under consideration
- Forest manager works closely with the estate owner and other key stakeholders.
