The first raw particleboard production completed on schedule as EGGER seeks to better serve U.S. market

LEXINGTON, N.C. (SEPTEMBER 24, 2020) – EGGER, one of the world’s leading wood-based materials suppliers, today announced it has completed its first raw particleboard production, marking the start of operations at its new manufacturing facility in Lexington. Employees watched excitedly as the first particleboard panel underwent the final stages of production, transforming raw wood chips into a finished board as the raw materials moved through the press and finishing line.

Production of particleboard will be a major production focus for the Lexington plant, in addition to particleboard lamination, which began earlier this month. Particleboard is usable for a large number of applications and well suited for various laminates due to its triple-layer structure with a sturdy core layer and fine surface layers. Some of the particleboard produced in Lexington will be sold in its raw form, while the remainder will go on to the lamination presses to be finished and sold as thermally fused laminate (TFL) panels.

“With this last major milestone, the exciting and challenging journey of this greenfield project will soon come to an end,” said Bernhard Vorreiter technical and production project manager. “It is an emotional moment, and our project team is proud to have had the privilege and opportunity to build EGGER’s first U.S. plant. Together, we have worked through many significant challenges to build this state-of-the-art facility on-time, and we are grateful to everyone who has contributed to this success over the past three years.”

Construction on the $700 million facility began in late 2018 with the goal of beginning production by late 2020. The state-of-the-art particleboard manufacturing plant, which now employs 280 people, contributes to the regional economy through the purchase of wood byproducts from sawmills in and around North Carolina and through work with a range of local suppliers for additional services.

Last month, EGGER announced the company’s 2019/2020 earnings recording 2.83 billion euro ($3.35B USD) in sales for the second year in a row – a victory for the company as it successfully mitigated challenges associated with the COVID-19 pandemic. EGGER Group credits the company’s solid financial basis, global presence, state-of-the-art facilities and high employee retention as key factors for continued company growth. “We are thankful that our company has continued to grow and are optimistic about the upcoming fiscal year with the addition of our new Lexington plant,” said Mario Bobsin, plant manager for commercial services. “In an effort to continue growth within the North American market, we will launch the first-ever EGGER Decorative Collection, which delivers a comprehensive range of authentic woodgrain and material reproductions alongside solid colors, with texture finishes ranging from trendy ultra-matte, to upscale, mirror-like gloss, to embossed-in-register (EIR) textures.”

Founded in 1961 in St. Johann in Tyrol, Austria, EGGER GROUP is a more than $3 billion privately-held, family-owned company comprised of more than 9,900 associates. With 20 production plants worldwide, EGGER is a global leader in the manufacturing of wood-based materials for the furniture and interior design, flooring and building products industries. The company’s extensive and value-added product range, including laminates, raw particleboard, thermally fused laminate (TFL), Medium Density Fiberboard (MDF), edge banding, MDF Moulding and laminate flooring can be found in countless private and public spaces worldwide.
