EGGER Notches Major Milestone with Completion of First Rail Car Shipment

The first railcar shipment in North America

The first railcar full of EGGER products in North America waits to depart our Lexington facility en route to Cedar Hill, Texas.

Rail shipping will allow EGGER to serve customers more efficiently as company embraces more sustainable options to serve U.S. market

LEXINGTON, N.C. (April 20, 2021) – EGGER, one of the world’s leading wood-based materials suppliers, today announced it has completed its first rail car shipment, a new milestone for the Lexington, N.C. facility. The first Norfolk Southern rail car was sent on its way from Lexington on Monday, April 12 and will arrive in Cedar Hill, Texas this week. Additional loadings are scheduled to become part of EGGER’s ongoing operations.

“Adding rail service to EGGER’s list of transportation allows us to diversify our shipping options and ensure that products are getting to customers more efficiently,” said Kenneth Brown, EGGER Plant Manager. “We’re especially grateful to Norfolk Southern for their partnership and the opportunity to incorporate a more sustainable option into the EGGER shipment lineup.”

EGGER is implementing rail shipping earlier than anticipated after the railroad tracks adjacent to the facility passed final inspection in January. Since then, the two companies have been working quickly to order rail cars to the site. EGGER is now determining which of its customers have rail access and eventually expects to ship up to 10% of the plant’s produced material via rail cars. Future plans for EGGER also include purchasing a “Boxcar Special” forklift specifically designed to streamline the loading process.

Aligning with EGGER’s sustainability efforts, the company will be able to reduce transportation costs by up to 40% and reduce the amount of carbon emissions by using the rail service.

Last year, EGGER completed its first raw particleboard production, marking the start of operations at its new manufacturing facility. Production of particleboard, in addition to particleboard lamination, will be the major production focuses for the Lexington plant.
