Sound insulation is an essential quality factor for residents and users of buildings. When evaluating building components, the quality of airborne sound insulation and, especially in the case of ceilings, the effectiveness of impact sound insulation is examined.

In the case of timber beam ceilings, good impact sound insulation can be achieved by additional measures, such as suspended ceilings and raw ceiling weighting. The quality of the sound insulation depends largely on the quality of the execution.

Multi-layered constructions for high sound insulation qualities

Multi-layered constructions can still achieve good sound insulation properties despite a lightweight timber frame construction. These constructions protect noise against the outside and reduce both the transmission of airborne sound and impact sound transmissions within the building.

In addition to the good sound insulation properties of a building component, the following key principles are decisive for good sound insulation:
  • Avoidance of sound bridges through which sound transmission could occur
  • Reduction of sound transmission via flanking components
  • Avoidance of connection joints that are not properly closed

Airborne sound insulation value

The assessed airborne sound insulation value [Rw in dB] describes the quality of the sound insulation of a building component against airborne sound. In case of an external component, street noise is reduced by the component to such a extent that it is no longer considered to be disturbing.

Impact sound level

In contrast to the airborne sound insulation of a building component, which is described by an insulation dimension, the quality of the impact sound insulation of ceilings is defined by a sound level, the standard impact sound level [Ln,w in dB]. This describes how high the sound level is in the room below the ceiling for a defined impact sound event above the ceiling.
