Which stress/usage classes are there?

Which stress class is the right one?

Multi-layer modular floor coverings (MMF, EN 16511) and laminate flooring (EPLF, EN 13329) marketed in Europe must be classified according to EN ISO 10874 and marked with the corresponding standard symbol, the so-called stress or use class. The stress class is a quality category according to EN 13329/ EN 16511 and provides information about the load capacity and thus the recommended areas of use of the floor. For standard-compliant testing and classification, the products are continuously subjected to standardised tests that ensure a high level of quality assurance.

The higher the stress class, the higher the quality and load-bearing capacity of the product. It is always possible to use a product with a higher stress class in premises with a lower intensity of use, but not vice versa.

The following table provides an overview of the recommended applications for each stress class:

Stress class
Area of use
Intensity of use
Stress level
Application areas
21 Private residence Moderate Temporary use Bedroom, guest room
22 Private residence Normal Continuous use Dining room, living room
23 Private residence High Intensive use Corridor, kitchen
