Micro Living and Circular Living are strong trends that are redefining how we live. In cooperation with Häfele, the Nagold (DE) specialist for intelligent furniture and construction hardware, lighting and electronic locking systems, EGGER has brought these trends to life under the name "The Moving Tree" in the form of an oversized tree trunk that can be walked on and lived in. The concept demonstrates the possibilities of flexible, comfortable living in the smallest of spaces.

Inspired by the forest as the place of origin of EGGER products, a tree trunk forms the centrepiece of this special exhibition space in the newly renovated EGGER Forum in St. Johann in Tirol (AT). The round shape and unusual proportions of the tree trunk presented a challenge, but this was overcome with modern surfaces and multifunctional furniture modules. It enables a seamless transition between the entrance and bathroom, living, sleeping and working areas as well as the kitchen. The EGGER DecoWall forms the outer shell. This special print of a tree bark was printed directly onto the sanded OSB board using digital printing. It enhances the wood-based material.

Häfele has incorporated technical refinements and clever hardware to combine the cosiness of a cave with modern, sustainable living. Thanks to the magnetic levitation technology, the modular living comfort weighing up to two tonnes can be easily pushed apart and experienced from all sides. The project offers various areas of use, including a kitchen, a living space with versatile options for working and sleeping as well as a multifunctional entrance area with bathroom and toilet.

A highlight of the Moving Tree is the well-designed lighting, which can be changed at the touch of a button. By changing the light colour, a woodgrain decor can appear warm and inviting or cool and hygienic. The direction of the light makes a surface appear deep and emphasises textures.

The Natural Wild Oak decor was used for the flooring (EPL182), walls and ceiling (H1318 ST10) - it is available in the EGGER Interior Match for furniture and interior design as well as flooring. The homogeneous realisation creates an effect that makes visitors feel like they are inside an oversized tree trunk. The selected decor on laminated chipboard and laminate flooring achieves the continuous surface covering of the interior cladding and creates a successful basis for the other decors in the three core zones: entrance/bathroom, living/sleeping and kitchen.

A combination of U604 ST9 Reed Green and U999 PM Black was chosen for the kitchen fronts. The colour green is subconsciously associated with nature and therefore stands for sustainability like no other colour. The uni colour black provides an important contrast. The F800 ST9 Crystal Marble decor was used for the back wall of the kitchen. With its veins full of character in warm grey, which create harmonious transitions, this marble has a very natural effect.

Similar decors were selected for the living room and bedroom. F685 ST10 Acapulco was used in addition to Reed Green and Black. The decor looks chunky yet still elegant in the room and it is a trendy eye-catcher.

The bathroom has a very modern and timeless design. The F243 Light Grey Candela Marble looks like a mixture of marble and concrete, but shows elements of a fine stone appearance. Matching the marble, the H1362 ST12 Light Baronia Oak provides a pleasant diversion. The interplay of light and dark annual rings in Light Baronia Oak has an almost graphic effect. The opposing florets, however, show a typical veneer character. Unlike in the kitchen, living area and bedroom, the EPD045 Anthracite Jura Slate decor was chosen as the water-resistant Design Flooring GreenTec for the bathroom. This EGGER Design Flooring GreenTec creates a pleasant contrast with its dark look and authentic feel.

Sustainability was also an important factor in this project. For example, the Eurodekor laminated chipboard used is characterised by a high proportion of wood from the circular economy:

  • 76% wood from the circular economy
  • 4% of that pre-consumer recycled wood (board cut-outs)
  • 24% of that post-consumer recycled wood (old furniture, pallets)
  • 48% of that by-products from the sawmill industry (hackchips, sawdust)
  • 24% wood from sustainable forestry
