Unusual mountain huts in the Krkonoše National Park

Students of the Faculty of Architecture CTU in Prague designed six modern huts that invite hikers to relax and offer protection against bad weather.
The Krkonoše or Giant Mountains are a mountain range located in the north of the Czech Republic and the south-west of Poland. In the Krkonoše, tourists are often surprised by storms and rain showers. For this reason, the Krkonoše National Park commissioned 8 lecturers and 29 students from the Department of Architectural Design II FA CTU to design, plan, and build 6 mountain huts. “We love working with architecture students. It is beneficial for both parties involved. The students have an interesting opportunity to implement their new ideas and we obtain quality designs for our needs,” explains Robin Böhnisch, director of the National Park. Two factors had to be taken into account for the design: the maximum construction surface of 16m² and the budget of 60,000 CZK (2.340 EUR) per hut. The students were inspired by the landscape of the Krkonoše. Materials such as EGGER OSB 3 boards, metal sheets, charred wooden boards, wooden panels or even recycled steel silos were used. The six unique works were completed within one single semester and were given the names Atüln, Jenga, Kømen, Oko, Silo, and Stan.
