Continuous creativity: 25 years of decorative laminates from Gifhorn

A product which is still young has prevailed on the market across the continents, opened up versatile application areas and is still heading for growth. Now decorative laminates produced in a continuous process celebrate an impressive anniversary: 25 years ago they were produced in Gifhorn for the first time in the world. Today laminates and melamine edge bandings of the brand Egger are a brand name in the international wood and furniture industry.

It all began in 1977, when Ulrich Zierold from Gifhorn for the first time in the world produced decorative laminated boards in a continuous production process (Continuous Pressed Laminates) in his company in Gifhorn. With this advantage of being no longer bound to fixed dimensions anymore, but to deliver surface materials possible to postform in desired lengths instead, new sales opportunities were opened up quickly.

1989 Gifhorn became part of the EGGER group after a previous good partnership between both companies for many years. Except for the EGGER group, a large clientele is served on the free market which takes in approx. 40 % of the Gifhorn production. This includes also important wood-based material and furniture producers, component producers as well as trading firms and special buyers from the laboratory and clinical sector as well as vehicle construction.

The arguments with the competitors concerning alleged quality differences between conventionally produced HPL (High Pressure Laminates) products and continuously produced laminates, which lasted for about two decades, are a thing of the past. Keeping the standards for both processes and acceptance on the market have confirmed that there are practically no differences for both procedures concerning quality and strain.
